IL Vocodex: The Definitive Write-Up
IL Vocodex is a VST/AU plugin developed by Image-Line, the creators of FL Studio. Widely regarded as one of the most versatile and "musical" vocoders available, it is famous for its ability to turn vocal samples into synthetic, robotic instruments, as well as its extensive modulation capabilities that allow it to function as a multi-band effects processor.
Sample Quickstart Patch (concise)
- Inputs: Mic -> Modulator IN (phantom if condenser); Synth/Noise -> Carrier IN
- Bands: 16 for balance of clarity and warmth
- Attack/Release: 10 ms / 60 ms (starting point)
- Carrier level: unity with synth output; modulator preamp set so peaks reach ~-6 dBFS
- Mix: 70% vocoded / 30% dry for intelligibility
- Add gentle high-pass at 120 Hz on carrier to reduce mud; light reverb post-vocoder
Marco ripped the cables out. The Vocodex went silent. But the damage was done. The Teatro Notturno emptied in a slow, silent procession. No one asked for a refund. No one spoke. il vocodex effects
Band Control: You can adjust the number of bands and their distribution. Lowering the number of bands creates a more "robotic" and less clear sound, while higher numbers improve speech intelligibility. IL Vocodex: The Definitive Write-Up IL Vocodex is
- If you need 100% natural vocal timbre (no robotic coloration), don’t use heavy vocoding.
- Avoid extreme band boosting without dynamic control — it can sound honky or mask other mix elements.
