Pantera was formed in 1981 in Arlington, Texas, by brothers Dimebag Darrell (guitar) and Vinnie Paul (drums), along with vocalist Terrence Lee and bassist Tommy D. Brown. The band's early years were marked by a series of lineup changes, with Phil Anselmo joining the band in 1986.
