Overview

Asmoday (also rendered Asmodai, Asmodeus in related traditions) is a prominent figure in Western demonological and occult literature. He appears across Jewish, Christian, Islamic, and later Renaissance and grimoires traditions as a powerful demon, prince of demons, or king of hell with varied roles and attributes depending on the source.

Grimoires and Hierarchies

• Ars Goetia (Lesser Key of Solomon): Asmoday (Asmodeus) is listed as a high-ranking demon—often the 32nd spirit—described with specific sigils, abilities, and the power to grant knowledge of mathematics, architecture, and to reveal hidden treasures. Descriptions vary: sometimes shown with three heads (man, ram, bull) and riding a dragon or together with a viper tail.
• Pseudomonarchia Daemonum (Johann Weyer): Asmoday appears with royal rank, commanding legions of demons; provides similar skills and is associated with gambling and lasciviousness in some later sources.
• Other sources: The Dictionnaire Infernal and other 18th–19th century demonological compendia recycle and expand on these attributes, adding iconography and anecdotal tales.

• Role: Asmodeus is depicted as a malicious spirit who kills the husbands of Sarah on their wedding nights before consummation.
• Motivation: Driven by sexual jealousy and possessiveness.
• Defeat: The protagonist, Tobias, drives the demon away by burning the liver and heart of a fish on incense, facilitated by the Archangel Raphael. This establishes Asmoday’s primary ancient archetype: a demon of irrational lust and obstruction.
